The Ministry of Time
Kaliane Bradley
My Review
I read this looking for recent comps to include in an agent query letter for my first book. Unfortunately, I'm not sure how I'd use this as a comparison. Oh well. Thanks for the recommendation, ChatGPT.
I did enjoy the book, however. Kaliane Bradley is a fantastic writer—albeit, she uses complex vocabulary I had to continually look up. For example, what in the hell is a "plosive"? Well, now I know... sort of—had to look it up again for this post. A plosive is a consonant produced by stopping airflow, then suddenly releasing it. Think of a P or B sound, also a hard G, or a T, D, or K. Funny enough, I just attended a writing workshop that emphasized the usage of plosives in humorous writing.
Bradley's descriptive language and character development set this story apart. I loved her Graham Gore character and the complexity of the main character, whose name was never given.
It wasn't really a page turner for me, though...until maybe the last chapter or so. But overall, a great, fun, and interesting read.
