My Review

My English sister-in-law recommended this book, but not specifically for me. Jessica loves period dramas (18th through early 20th century British dramas - and some American), so it was recommended more for her. Surprisingly, I also enjoy them more than I would have expected. Pride & PrejudiceHouse of Mirth, and  Sense & Sensibility (which I read but apparently didn't log).

The Cater Street Hangman maintained historical customs for the house of a gentleman. But when a policeman (a job of the working class) comes around and starts breaking those norms, everything the inhabitants know and believe is challenged.

There's humor in the simple slips of manners—"what was he thinking entering the withdrawing room unnanounced!"

Those slips lead to romance, if you can call it that. Romance back then is somewhat laughable compared to today's standards. It's stuffy and formal and would lead you believe engagements are simple business transactions no different than getting excited about a new pair of shoes.

I did enjoy the story and hope to read more in the Thomas & Charlotte Pitt series. I might even recommend the book to my wife.
